Her debut picture book, THIS DAY IN JUNE, won the 2015 ALA Stonewall Award, it was chosen as a Top Ten pick on the GLBTRTs Rainbow List, and it won the Notable. By night, she writes childrens books and engages in other forms of subversive creativity. Children are in the mix throughout, as well, driving home the underlying message: “All invited/ All excited.” Substantial endnotes discuss each scene and provide context for the people and groups represented, along with parental tips for discussing gender and sexuality. Pitman teaches psychology and womens studies at Sacramento City College.
